Why do women stigmatize the sexually provocative behavior of other women? University of Ottawa psychologist Tracy Vaillancourt
has a theory:
"Sex is coveted by men," she said. "Accordingly, women limit access as a way of maintaining advantage in the negotiation of this resource. Women who make sex too readily available compromise the power-holding position of the group, which is why many women are particularly intolerant of women who are, or seem to be, promiscuous."
In other words, Vaillancourt thinks it's mostly about resentment toward the competition over mate selection.
I think there are several factors involved, especially this: women want romance and friendship from their special guy, and friendship with a number of guys, and women fear that excessive sexual aggrandizement will distract guys' attention away from the necessary friendship-building habits and attitudes.
