Got A Question

Anybody out there remember an old story about some Persian Gulf state whose citizens were using Google Maps to highlight some luxurious architecture that the haves were building for the haves at the expense of the have-nots? Wish I could remember which country - I'm wondering if that nation is one of those where recent popular uprisings have been fanning out. If anyone out there remembers which country it was - and can send a news story link - send me an email. Click the "email" link at the top of the page, and remember to change the -at- to a @.

Parasites

Michelle Malkin reports a list of Wisconsin school administrators - 860 of 'em - whose salaries exceed $100,000. That's straight salary, not including benefits. Robert Stacy McCain did some math - collectively, they earn $97.9 million; average salary is 114K.

Source material is here - click the year 2010 under the heading "Administrative Salary Reports, 1998 - 2010." The doc is an Excel worksheet.

I did some more checking. There are 4327 administrators listed. Here's a salary breakdown

860 (19.9%) earn six figures.
805 (18.6%) earn 90K-99K
855 (19.8%) earn 80K-89K.
936 (21.6%) earn 50-79K.
871 (20.1%) earn under 50K.

Total salaries = $336,887,337.61
Total benefits = $128,487,676.77
Total compensation = $465,375,014.38

On average, benefits = 38% of salary.

Median salary = $83,969
Median benefits = $33,194.00

Update: Hyperlink referenced in second paragraph left out of original post - that's been fixed.

Dallas County Commissionier Plays Race Card From His Sleeve

I ain't talking Texas Hold 'Em.

During the meeting, Dallas Attorney Jeffery Scott Turner repeatedly referred to County Commissioner John Wiley Price as "Chief Mullah" - pronouncing the word as "moolah." Price thought the remarks were racist:

Price, the only African American on the commissioner’s court, said he was offended because the term “mullah” is close to “moolah” or “moolie” -- a slur that has its roots in a slang that was used against Italian immigrants and was later used by the same to defame or discredit African Americans.

I first caught this story on the Mark Davis Show on radio station WBAP. Davis pointed out that "moolie" is a slang term that scarcely anybody outside of the Bronx has ever heard. The Urban Dictionary verifies that moolie is Italian immigrant derogatory slang for blacks.

How in the heck does a Southerner like Price know about a Yankee Italian immigrant slang term? Does he have a doctorate in racial epithets or something?

But Turner's pronunciation of the word is clearly "moolah" and not "moolie." The Urban Dictionary documents no racial connotation for the word moolah.

Let's see Price spin a racial epithet out of "Wileytollah."

Turner wasn't the only object of Price's indignation (link via the Spat):

Six citizens addressed the court. All of them talked about the recent controversial departure of county Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet. Sherbet, who was the Elections Administrator for 24 years, said he felt Price and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins forced him out.

After the meeting was adjourned, Price lashed out at all six:

As Price stood to leave, he looked at Turner and the five other citizens who addressed the court. Price said to them, “All of you are white. Go to hell!”

Price repeated “go to hell” three more times. An unknown member of the audience said, “You should be ashamed!”

“I’m not ashamed!” Price answered. “I’m not ashamed! Go to hell!”

Heh

A belated Super Bowl thought...the Steelers have lost two Super Bowls - once to the Cowboys (Super Bowl XXX), and once in the Cowboys' stadium. Sweet.

Still waiting on Verizon to port over my old email settings - which is why none of my hosted images are showing up on the blog. I really need to get around to subscribing to a free image hosting service separate from Verizon - especially as my online image collection approaches the 10MB disk space Verizon allocates.
