Asteroid Defense

Reason's Ron Bailey says a killer asteroid has a razor-thin chance of hitting us in 2029. NRO's Jonah Goldberg ponders the adequacy of current technology:

All I know is that this seems a natural add-on to airborne laser volcano lancing research, except lasers would be useless against such asteroids and planes can't fly in space.

Maybe we could have Burt Rutan design a small craft outfitted with a particle weapon to intercept incoming asteroids - kinda like this.
